Millainen on ollut italialaisen matkailijan vaikutelma Lapista ja sen ihmisistä?

Maltan tunnetuin nykykirjailija OLIVER FRIGGIERI (s. 1947) opiskeli filosofiaa sekä kirjallisuutta ja väitteli filosofian tohtoriksi Maltan kirjallisuudesta vuonna 1978. Hän on toiminut Maltan yliopiston maltan kielen ja kirjallisuuden professorina vuodesta 1987.

Friggierin runsaaseen tuotantoon kuuluu runokokoelmia, novelleja ja romaaneja sekä lukuisia kirjallisuuskriittisiä teoksia. Hän on osallistunut kymmeniin kansainvälisiin runotapahtumiin ympäri Eurooppaa. Hänen runojaan on puettu musiikkiin ja hänen novelleistaan on tehty televisiosovituksia. Hän on saanut useita kirjallisuuspalkintoja (mm. Premio Mediterraneo Internazionale, Palermo 1988, Malta Government Literary Award 1988, 1996, 1997) sekä Maltan valtion myöntämän National Order of Merit -kunniamerkin vuonna 1999.

Friggierin tärkeimpiin teoksiin lukeutuvat La cultura italiana a Malta – Dun Karm , Storia della letteratura maltese, A Turn of the Wheel, Minciuna, La menzogna, Le rituel du crépuscule, Nous sommes un desir, A Distraught Pilgrim, Povesti pentru o seara, A Malte, histoires du crepuscule, La voce dell’onda,  Koranta and other short Stories from Malta, Dizzjunarju ta’ Termini Letterarji sekä novellit Fil-Parlament ma Jikbrux Fjuri (Kukat eivät kuki parlamentissa), Gizimin li qatt ma jiftah (Jasmiinit eivät puhjenneet kukkaan) ja It-tfal jigu bil-vapuri (Lapset saapuvat laivalla). Friggierin runot vuosilta 1961−2001 on julkaistu kokoelmateoksessa Il-Poeziji Migbura.

Friggieri kirjoittaa maltaksi, englanniksi ja italiaksi. Hänen teoksiaan on käännetty useille kielille. La voce dell’onda -kokoelman runoja on julkaistu suomeksi vuonna 2001 Saaren äänessä.

Nyt suomennettu novellikokoelma Viimeinen faldetta ja muita pieniä tarinoita Maltalta (Stejjer Għal Qabel Jidlam) julkaistiin maltaksi 1986. Novellit ilmestyivät italiaksi ja englanniksi (Storie per una sera. Racconti maltesi, Koranta and other Short Stories from Malta) vuonna 1994.

Saari on kirjoittanut itsekin vuonna 1992 kirjan mafiasta, Tauti nimeltä mafia.
